The Aztecs Essay Example

The Aztecs Essay Did you know that the Aztec took their human sacrifice(act of offering something to a deity in propitiation) very seriously? Why do you think the historians should emphasize on the Aztec sacrifice? Well, historians should emphasize(pay special attention to) on this topic because of the Interesting things that are practiced during the sacrifice. The three Ideas we will talk about Is how often or why the Aztec sacrifice, why are humans sacrificed, and the religious aspect. But here are their background (that were told from Document C and E). The Aztec first came from rather Mexico around sass. These people had common rivals(opponents)like the Spanish. Obviously, they had prisoners from war and the prisoners were to be sacrificed. The Aztec took care of the prisoners for a year to know each other, but why did they end up killing them? Now, this topic will get very interesting(the deeper you get in) so I believe this is why historians should emphasize on the Aztec sacrifice. Sacrifice was a huge cultural event to the Aztec people. The prisoners were taken from Etiquette and were brought to the capitol (doc C). The Aztec picked a warrior tit physical beauty who was later killed at the end of the ceremony (doc E). He was treated like a family member for a long year until given up for sacrifice (doc E). He was given all of the needed necessities and more. For example food, clothes, teachers, and instructions. This man was treated like a living god. When the day of sacrifice came, a priest sliced there chest and ripped out the heart and threw it into the shrine before the gods (doc D). Then the priest rolled the bodies down the blood dated stairway (doc D). This process lasted from midday until nightfall. About 2,300 men were killed (doc D). This sacrifice was a huge cultural event for the Aztec especially the high class Aztec who got to sit back and watch this ceremony be performed (doc D figure). Human sacrifice Is the act of killing one or more human beings, usually as an offering to a deity, as part of a religious ritual. Spanish explorers and soldier who had contact with the Aztec between 151 7, when an expedition from Cuba first explored the Yucatan, and 1521, when Herman Court ©s conquered the Aztec capital of Ethnocentric, made observations of and wrote reports about the practice of human sacrifice. A wide variety of explanations and interpretations of the Aztec practice of human sacrifice have been proposed by modern scholars. Most scholars of Pre- Columbian civilization see human sacrifice among the Aztec as a part of the long cultural tradition of human sacrifice in Mesospheric. (Background Essay: The Aztec: Should Historians Emphasize Agriculture or Human Sacrifice) (Document A) The Aztec sacrificed humans Instead of animals to their gods. The Aztec priests dressed up the victims to look like a god. They treated some victims to a life of luxury and let them live as gods for a year before the sacrifice. When the sacrifice time E) Animals could not be made to look or live like gods and only human hearts were a worthy sacrifice. This gorge subject matter has sensational appeal to the masses, like modern news stories of Satan-worshippers, serial killers and murder trials, for example. If people are drawn to the subject matter by morbid curiosity, they could end up learning a lot about the Aztec history as a side benefit. So, the Aztecan sacrifice is still an important topic that the historians should emphasize so that they can dig up more of the Aztec history. Many people question or gripe(complain) why should the historians emphasize the Aztec sacrifice? . Well, not only the topic is interesting, it can prove many things for the historians for their questions. For an example, a historian was pondering(wondering) about why most of the Aztec were not killed for the sacrifice. If that historian emphasized the Aztec sacrifice, they will surely find their answers. Historians should emphasize this profound(deep, smart meaning)topic because it is a very interesting and can lead to sufficient(enough) answers.

Susan Power's Scared Wilderness - Essay Example Different backgrounds and eras gave them an idea to restore foundation to fulfill the dream of American women. The novel is taking us through the time, when the Mohawk were living on the territory of present-day Minnesota. The fourth novel by Susan Power is taking up to the centre cultural and spiritual traditions. We are getting cognizance with four women: Gladys Swan is enjoying the mansions on St. Paul’s Avenue. She is a housekeeper in the house of Candace Jenssen, who is well-to-do lady. She has all necessary material goods, she does not suffers from poverty, in spite of this she has a lack of spirit, being in disconnection with her husband and the sources and heritage of her Mohawk culture. Gladys, being as the elder of an Ojibwe, is thinking about putting Candace in touch with her ancestors as her private mission. However, Candace does not know about this idea. Beautiful Maryam is her co-conspirator in this unusual task. Candace dismisses appeals of Maryam, thinking about her as a hallucination caused by a brain tumor. Maryam changes the strategy, appealing to Gladys, who is very glad to meet â€Å"a sister†, who would join to her work and share her desire to help Candace. The author is trying to show is the images of the prehistoric biblical times, giving the readers an interesting re-imagining of first meetings of Native Americans with the missionaries of the Christian religion. She makes the reader to look from another fresh point of view to the lives Mary, Joseph and Jesus. Al this is happening in addition to the Power`s contemporary line of story, returning to the traditions of ancient cultures, which the imaginative time-traveler would be able to found in the early 17th century on the territory belonging to the Mohawk people, when man were hunting the food and female Mohawks looked after the gardens and collected vegetables to feed the tribes. â€Å"Do you really want to be reduced to some kind of throwback stereotype from the Dark Ages?

Things Fall Apart :: essays research papers

Things Fall Apart is by the widely acclaimed African author Chinua Achebe. The story told is a tragic one of a person by the name of Okonkwo who's own stubborn views about what it is to be a man leads to his own demise. Okonkwo is often compared by people to the tragic hero like those in Greek tragedies. This is probably the primary way in which the text is interpreted but I feel Achebe is trying to make another point as well through the story. Achebe received inspiration to write the novel from a poem written by an Englishman by the name of William Butler Yeats. The title of the poem is The Second Coming. The poem talks about anarchy that is upon the world during the present time and how things will change with the 'second coming." During this 'second coming'; the chaos that is prevalent will end finally after two thousand years. Achebe uses this poems basic idea by creating the story of Okonkwo who lives in a chaotic and barbaric world. To outsiders who are observing Okonkwo's people, they may certainly seem uncivilized in many ways. Achebe symbolizes the end of this anarchy in Okonkwo's society by the introduction of Christian missionaries who pacify the Ibo people and ultimately cause the death of Okonkwo. I believe Okonkwo is the last and final source of chaos that is finally muted to bring civility to the people. The Ibo people live a very peaceful but ignorant life. At first glance their lifestyle may seem to be normal but when examining the depths of it we can clearly see why it would seem to be chaotic. When I use the term chaos or anarchy I don't mean it in the literal sense but in comparison to the modern world or in particular England. Anarchy or chaos in my usage is meant to be the lack of morals and/or certain values, which we as westerners would agree to be good. There are many things that the Ibo people were accustomed to that we would find horrific and savage. One of their customs was to throw away babies that were borne as identical twins because they were thought of as being bad. Another custom was to mutilate the dead corpse of a baby that was thought to be evil in order to prevent it from being borne again. Another thing that is chaotic about their culture was the fact that their laws and justice system were very perverted.
